I felt exactly as Nannerl did in most every moment, and the ride Marie Lu took us one had me quite literally holding my breath. The blend and flow between the real world of 18th century Europe and the fantastical Kingdom of Back was so seamless that I could barely tell what was real and what wasn’t. I found this immensely pleasing, as, if the real Nannerl read this story, I believe she would be incredibly pleased. Except I keep pronouncing it like “Wolf-erl” so… yeah it’s stuck now). The story of the Kingdom of Back is inspired by the life of the real Nannerl Mozart and the imaginary world she created with her younger brother, Wolfgang (who, thanks to the novel, I will forever refer to as Woferl. Let’s start with the ties to history, as that is what I can think about most clearly right now. If you like listening to music while you read, I would strongly encourage finding a playlist of Mozart’s works. This book has left me at a complete loss for words as well as a persistent desire to go listen to Mozart.
